Wisdom's Song

In this passage the Voice of Wisdom ("Logos," the Understanding or Intention of God) celebrates the work of creation.

The Scripture

Proverbs 8:22–31
New American Standard translation

The Lord possessed me at the beginning of His way, before His works of old. From everlasting I was established, from the beginning, from the earliest times of the earth.

When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills I was brought forth; while He had not yet made the earth and the fields, nor the first dust of the world.

When He established the heavens, I was there, when He inscribed a circle on the face of the deep, when He made firm the skies above, when the springs of the deep became fixed, when He set for the sea its boundary so that the water would not transgress His command, when He marked out the foundations of the earth.

Then I was beside Him, as a master workman; and I was daily His delight, Rejoicing always before Him, rejoicing in the world, His earth, and having my delight in the sons of men.

Wisdom Tells the Story of Creation

Proverbs 8:22–31 ~ reimagined by Deborah

At the beginning,
before there was a before,
when all Was
free potentiality
instantaneous aeons
ancient Works
I was.

I Am
from the first,
before there was a before;
when there were no depths
or heights
nor widths:
I Am.

I delighted
in the lighting
of the stars;
celestial fires
the universe
Our imagination
and warming
Our desires.

I danced
my joy
as a never-ending stream,
swaying, swirling, undulating
and so the hills were shaped,
the rivers formed,
the mountains arose,
and the oceans clapped their hands;
while I danced.

I labored
and in the Garden
there arose
orchards and vineyards,
pastures and forests,
sweet fruit in branches,
soft grass on the earth,
and lilies in the fields;

I labored
and in the Garden
there arose
the first Dust of the World.

I sang
and birds came forth
variations on My theme,
whales and dolphins,
wolves and lions,
growling bears and humming bees
humans, too,
raised their voices:
all of Creation
sang with me.

I rested
and reflected,
as a master artisan;
tenderly, as a mother
admiring her newborn,
encircling the Universe.

I rejoice
My precious child
at play.

May the Beloved’s joy and delight abound,
